Steamships, known as the Mosquito Fleet, transported goods and people around Puget Sound from the 1850s to the 1930s. The wharf at Coupeville, built in 1905, was an important center of commerce on Whidbey Island, and the town and wharf remain a key venue for community gatherings to this day.
