Readers may remember hearing about plans to refurbish and modernize the U.S. Coast Guard base in Seattle. The Coast Guard announced this September, 2025, that the construction contract has been awarded to The Whiting-Turner Company.

Phase 1 includes construction of two modernized major cutter berths and the widening and upgrading of existing berths capable of hosting two new PSCs (Polar Security Cutters). The U.S. Coast Guard noted that modernization of Base Seattle is critical to supporting future operations to establish U.S. maritime dominance, missions in the high latitudes, and advance national security interests, including in the Arctic and Antarctic.

Dredging is required to accommodate future PSC berthing and operations at the facility. Removal and disposal of dredged material will be done in accordance with the Environmental Protection Agency and other federal requirements.

The U.S. Coast Guard, an important arm of the government, is tasked with regulating and safeguarding ports and waterways, protect the marine transportation system, lead drug interdiction, and secure the maritime border, among other duties.
