Since the return of s/v One Ocean from the Around-the-Americas Expedition, crew members have continued their mission of kelp studies, ocean temperature research, and their educational outreach to school classrooms.
A fitting name, vessel s/v One Ocean will be the spotlight boat at the upcoming One Ocean Week Seattle, which runs from October 19 through October 25. Every October, Seattle becomes the world’s meeting point for the Blue Economy, One Ocean Week. The conference brings together ocean leaders, innovators, investors, policymakers, and artists. The event is hosted by Maritime Blue and is open to anyone curious about the future of our ocean.

Vessel s/v One Ocean will be at Bell Harbor and their educational tent will be set up outside the marina. Guided Tours of s/v One Ocean are being offered daily at Noon, 1 pm, and 2 pm, please register HERE. You can join the crew for Happy Hour and hear their first-hand stories about the expedition on Thursday, October 22, from 5 pm to 7 pm; Tickets ($50) are available HERE for the Thursday event – come aboard, explore the boat, and get a glimpse of what it takes to live, work, conduct research, and sail through some of the most challenging waters on Earth.
Co-captain and crew member Jennifer Dalton reports that while the boat is back, their mission continues – there are presentations to schedule, research to organize, stories to write, and partnerships to nurture. Their work continues through collaboration with research institutions, including the University of Washington’s Applied Physics Laboratory, the University of Victoria, and BC Whales. Jennifer noted that data collected during the voyage contributes to a broader understanding of our oceans and the changes taking place within them. She went on to say “We saw how deeply connected we all are to the water around us. It is a reminder that the oceans don’t recognize boundaries drawn on maps. The health of our global ocean is tied to the health of our local waters.” With the help of researchers, educators, sponsors, volunteers, donors, and students we will continue to develop One Island, One Ocean into a long-term research and education program.
