Weather buoys give boaters vital information about the current wind and sea state, helpful information when planning a transit, especially across large bodies of water like the Strait of Georgia.

Two new weather buoys have been installed in the Strait of Georgia as a pilot project under the Ocean Protection Plan, Environment Canada; these weather buoys will continue to provide data until further notice.

The new weather buoys are located along the Strait of Georgia – one just outside Vancouver BC’s English Bay, south of Bowen Island at 49.302 N, 123.358 W; and the other weather buoy located mid-way along the Strait of Georgia east of Porlier Pass at 49.025 N, 123.430 W

Real-time hourly data (wind, wave height, and wave period) for both stations can be monitored directly through Environment Canada Marine Weather.
