The general public is invited to an in-person meeting on September 18, from 6pm to 7:30pm at the Ballard Branch of the Seattle Public Library. This is the first community meeting for boaters and other interested parties to participate in the process of developing a new master plan for Blake Island State Marine Park.

Come learn about the results of preliminary site studies and cost estimates for possible development options. The Parks Department will share what they know about the condition of buildings and utilities on the island and feasible development.

The planning process will be completed in four phases, with community participation leading up to the final phase:

  • Identifying issues and concerns
  • Exploring alternative approaches
  • Preparing preliminary recommendations
  • Preparing final recommendations

Plans for Blake Island Marine Park include future improvements for both the uplands and in-water facilities. The Blake Island Master Plan will be created with input from Parks staff, Tribal governments, and the public to guide future investments and management decisions at Blake Island.

Uplands. Planning for the uplands include concession buildings and their viability for future use, trail rerouting as adaptive measures for sea level rise, transportation to the island for the public, interpretive planning, and other considerations.

Marina. Alternatives for a marina rebuild were provided 2-3 years ago. At that time the boating public expressed their desire for dredging and installing new docks and gangways in a reconfigured horseshoe layout to increase moorage capacity and accommodate a wider variety of vessels, while staying within the existing marina’s footprint. This project is not yet confirmed nor yet funded by the State Legislature.

Preliminary Meeting. The first public meeting on September 18 is to identify issues and concerns – what is important to the park community and what should be considered through the planning process. If you are not able to attend the meeting at the Ballard Library located at 5614 22nd Ave. Seattle, go to the State Parks website for a recording of the presentation, which will be made available.

In addition to attending the meeting, the public can also submit written comment using the online public comment form.
