Owner Dave Knudsen, whose father was from Denmark, along with builder Jay Smith spent several years constructing Valkyrie – a 56-foot hand-crafted longship, with a 15-foot-wide beam. The ship was built in Anacortes, Washington, using timber from the West Coast and was constructed using no screws or bolts. The traditionally-built lapstrake ship holds 16 oars and 24 shields, and sports a dragon head prow.

Valkyrie was first launched in March, 2024, from Skyline Marina in Anacortes for sea trials. Thanks to the shipwright and journeymen, a seaworthy vessel of merit was successfully created. After rigorous Coast Guard inspections and certification, Valkyrie sailed to her new home port of Poulsbo in 2025. A unique and historic replica, Valkyrie is based on the ancient recovered ship Skuldelev, a Norwegian-build Viking ship unearthed after one thousand years from the waters at Roskilde, Denmark. Valkyrie is the first and only one of her kind in the United States!
