The annual Waterfront Festival in Anacortes features live music, food vendors, and maritime activities, including the ever popular “Quick and Dirty Boat Building” Competition sponsored by Frontier Building Supplies and Barret Financials’ Community Care Project. The festival runs from 10 am to 6 pm on Saturday and until 5 pm on Sunday.

Quick & Dirty Event. Local teams will be building their hand-powered craft for competition on Saturday. The public can stroll past all the action as competitors build their boats from supplied materials – plywood, lumber, tie-wraps, and quick-drying caulk. Brush-on latex paint is used to decorate their boats for creative visual enhancements plus a must-use “mystery material” which is provided to each team. The finished boats are paraded through the festival grounds, followed by the exciting race on Saturday, June 6, approximately 5:00 pm at Cap Sante Marina. Each team must have at least two team members in the boat during the entire race.

A variety of prizes are awarded, including the People’s Choice. You can vote by purchasing tokens/Nails for a $1, as many as you like for your chosen best team. This special event came to Anacortes over 17 years ago from the original creators, Kent Morrow, Fred Ableman, and Andy Schwenk.

Family Activities. Children can enjoy making their own mini wooden sailboats, sponsored by the Fidalgo Rotary Club, using provided materials, then test their creations in the flotation pool, great fun for aspiring sailors. Kids can also burn off some energy while experiencing the large pink, Carnival Slide located in the gravel parking lot, north side of Cap Sante parking. The whole family can enjoy free boat rides offered by volunteers of the Anacortes Yacht Club aboard members’ vessels. You will find these volunteers by the three flagpoles at the entrance to Cap Sante Marina, between the Marina Office (1019 Q Ave.) and Anthony’s Cabana.
