Bute Island located in the southeastern portion of Ladysmith Harbour, BC is one of those local, best-kept secrets. This small Regional Park is accessible by boat, kayak, and canoe, with a public float available for day use. Now boaters have the option of tying to one of eight recently installed stern-tie pins along the west side of the island.
The Cowichan Valley Regional District, with materials and funding assistance from the BC Marine Parks Forever Society, has installed 8 stern tie pins and chains for boaters at this Ladysmith Harbour Islands Regional Park. Stern ties provide a safe, secure method for anchoring boats, while preserving the natural beauty of the surrounding environment. Previous to the installation of these stern ties at Bute Island Reginal Park, boaters were informally tying lines to trees such as Arbutus trees along the foreshore, causing tree stress and raising the potential risk of tree health issues and damage. These new stern ties are a win-win for both boaters and the environment. The stern ties may be used for overnight stays free of charge. A rustic walking trail encircles the island with access to the marine foreshore at low tides.

Jim Philips, President of BC Marine Parks Forever Society, reported that the Society has donated over $130,000 for the installation of stern ties since 2015 and looks to continue its efforts with federal, provincial, and municipal governments to improve the environmental and safety aspects for all boaters. The Society has been active for a number of years with fundraising to acquire island property, and invest in improvements that benefit and enhance the boating experience.
