Western Washington is rich in the maritime industry with job opportunities in welding, manufacturing, sheathing, electrical, engine repair, fiberglass, and other trade skills. Unlike Europe, the U.S has been slow in recognizing the importance of trade schools. In the past, high schools have not generally focused student attention on the trades, but that is changing. Now more high schools have found ways to introduce students to the trades and offer high-school credit for hands-on training through various programs.
Core Plus Maritime is a program that offers opportunities for high school students to learn about maritime careers and receive training in marine technology. The Manufacturing Industrial Council is the non-profit organization who developed Core Plus Maritime and connects programs (now at 20 high schools) with their local maritime industry; engaged companies include shipyards, boat yards, boatbuilders, ship builders, seafood processors, commercial fishermen, service providers and others. Students enrolled in the program receive hands-on training during the school day at their high schools with industry-qualified instructors. Students earn industry recognized certificates, which are beneficial when applying for an entry level job or applying for a training program at a trades school across the country. Students also earn Math, Science, and ELA (language arts) credit towards graduation.
Core Plus Maritime hosted the “Try-A-Trade Day” on November 2, 2022, at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds (1200 Fairgrounds Rd. NW Bremerton, WA) for high school shop students to learn about career opportunities. There were 50 industry exhibitors and over 600 students in attendance. Additionally, there is a gathering of Core Plus students and educators each year at the Seattle Boat Show, along with 30 businesses for a job fair celebration with field trips and skill building seminars.
