Ever wonder what happens when you call 911 from your boat with an emergency message? If you are in the waters of Skagit County, there is a good chance that the next vessel you see will be an agile aluminum blue and grey boat with flashing red/yellow lights and “SKAGIT BAY SEARCH AND RESCUE” emblazoned on its side.

Skagit Bay Search and Rescue (SBSAR) is a non-profit, volunteer organization, formed under the auspices of the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office. Located in La Conner, Washington, it is one of seven search and rescue organizations available for call out in an emergency in Skagit County, including Mountain Rescue Unit, K-9 SAR, Ground SAR and 4 Rivers SAR among others. SBSAR works closely with the Sheriff’s Marine Patrol Unit, US Coast Guard and other SAR authorities as well as conducting joint training operations with local fire department marine response units.

SBSAR members come from all walks of life and share a common desire to help their fellow boaters by undergoing intensive training and practice in search and rescue techniques and medical treatment/transportation. Their backgrounds are varied and include licensed marine professionals, medical professionals, airplane pilots, and recreational boaters. Members are required to pass a Sheriff’s Office background check, two National Incident Management System (NIMS) exams, become qualified in helicopter rescue operations, and maintain certification in CPR and Basic First Aid.

Skagit Bay Search and Rescue also supports local community boating activities such as Dash to the Pass and Puget Sound Rower’s Race by providing a safety boat and safety observer services.

Interested in joining this dedicated group? SBSAR is looking for new volunteers. You will need to be at least 16-years old, be in good health, able to swim and dedicated to the work.  Members are expected to attend monthly business/training meetings in La Conner and monthly on-the-water search and rescue training in local waters.

SBSAR is entirely supported by donations and money from fund raisers.  This is a non-profit, 501c(3) organization and every dollar of your tax-deductible gift will be used to help fund equipment, vessels, and training.
