The Dock Management Plan finalized in 2024 for Pender Harbour and the Sunshine Coast calls for existing dock owners with open Styrofoam floatation to make repairs with encapsulated Styrofoam or alternative floatation, and provide light-penetrating decking.

This Dock Management Plan was created by the Province of BC and the shishalh Nation to reduce pollution and to protect the natural and cultural resources of the Greater Pender Harbour Area. To help dock owners, marina operators, coastal residents, and aquaculture users meet the obligations of the Management Plan, free drop-off events in select areas are being held June-July on the Sunshine Coast.

Dock owners will have a safe and responsible way to dispose of foam dock materials. A barge will be available for a select number of remote properties that cannot deliver foam to drop-off events. These free drop-off events for polystyrene foam are supported by the Government of BC in partnership with the shishalh Nation and the Ocean Legacy Foundation. The Foundation specializes in producing commercially available plastic pellets from 100 percent recycled ocean plastics to be transformed into new products like benches, picnic tables, and plastic lumber.

To make use of these Styrofoam drop-off events, pre-registration is required. To secure your spot, participating dock owners should contact Jessica@oceanlegacy.ca or go to https://forms.gle/dSktfW3ALkErxrvA7

The team will review your submission and follow up with drop-off details or pickup coordination.
