Having your diesel engine fail while underway can ruin your day and even your well-laid plans for the summer’s itinerary. An engine dead-in-the-water can add further stress and safety concerns. Diesel engines are incredibly reliable if they are well maintained. Problems usually arise when routine maintenance and inspections have been lacking, causing fuel issues or the engine overheating.

Boaters with diesel engines won’t want to miss the upcoming diesel engine training workshop with Matt Mardesich, starting at 9 am on Saturday, April 27 through Sunday, April 28th ending at 4 pm. Come learn how to maintain heat exchanges and the entire cooling system, how to check the injectors, and bleed the engine before starting. Class participants will work on live diesel engines at the Marine Technology Center in Anacortes and learn about different engine systems. Regular and annual maintenance includes:

  • Changing the oil and oil filters
  • Changing Fuel filters
  • Flushing the heat exchanger
  • Inspecting impellers
  • Replacing hoses and belts

Learn how to troubleshoot electrical systems for starting or charging, and how to install a vacuum gauge in your fuel system to detect blockage, bad fuel, or tank problems.

After this two-day course, you will have a good understanding of how your diesel engine works and the basic areas for good maintenance and troubleshooting. This very popular class fills quickly so don’t delay to send in your registration. Sign up for the class on the Cruisers College website. The Marine Technology Center in Anacortes is located at 1606 R Avenue.
