Have you ever wondered what’s in those modular units behind the fence at Des Moines Marina? SR3, the non-profit organization dedicated to rehabilitating injured marine animals, has invited the public to an Open House on April 20 from 10 am to 2 pm for a tour of their facility.

This family-friendly event is a great opportunity to ask questions about the important work done be SR3 – Response, Rehabilitation, and Research for marine mammals. There will be activities for youth and a chance to purchase adoption kits, t-shirts, and other merchandise. Viewing the animals is not part of the tour, however, there’s plenty to see including the Surgical Room, Fish Kitchen, and more. Tours take about 30 minutes.

If you are coming by car, parking is available in the lot west of the Center. Free parking can be found along 6th and 7th Avenues to the east of the Center. Those coming by boat to the City of Des Moines Marina should stop by the fuel dock to be assigned guest moorage space. Free moorage is offered up to 4 hours.

The SR3 Rescue Center, which opened in 2021, was the first animal rehabilitation center specializing in marine mammals and sea turtles in Washington State. SR3 is dedicated to assisting entangled, sick, or injured marine animals and providing rehabilitation as needed. They also conduct research by gathering information from the patients they treat, along with fieldwork such as collecting aerial images of whales and assisting with other marine mammal studies. Boaters can report entanglement sightings to NOAA Fisheries Entanglement Hotline at 877-767-9425, or call the U.S. Coast Guard on VHF Ch 16. Be sure to keep the legal distance from whales, but do keep track of the whale’s location until authorized responders and entanglement specialists arrive.
