Le Boat, Europe’s largest canal boat rental company, launched its North American base several years ago on the Rideau Canal in Ontario Canada. Le Boat will soon open a home base on the Trent Severn Waterway at Horseshoe Bay Marina located in Peterborough, Ontario.

The Trent Severn Waterway, over 100-years old, is a National Historic Site operated by Parks Canada. The waterway runs 240 miles via 44 locks from the Bay of Quintes on Lake Ontario, north westward to Georgian Bay at Port Severn. Construction of the locks began in 1833, originally designed to move military goods and personnel away from the Great Lakes out of reach of the U.S. Army.

The Trent Severn includes North America’s only marine railway and two of the highest hydraulic lift locks in the world – the Peterborough Lift (Lock 21) with a rise of over 60 feet, and the Kirkfield Lift (Lock 36) with a rise of 49 feet. Fenelon Falls (Lock 34) is where you can admire the famous step falls along the main street at the town of Kawartha Lakes. The Big Chute Railway (Lock 44) removes boats from the water with straps and transports the boat inside a cradle that moves on rails for about 60 feet from the Severn River into Georgian Bay.
