The west side of Vancouver Island has a remote and rugged appeal. The coastline from Port Renfrew to Brooks Peninsula has four protected Sounds, with inside waters. These Sounds are separated by 20-30 miles, for a relatively short Pacific Ocean passage. Barkley Sound and Alberni Inlet include the towns of Bamfield, Ucluelet, and Port Alberni, with moorages, supplies, and interesting shops. Fishing resorts and a variety of anchorages are here too. Clayoquot Sound includes the surf city of Tofino, with lovely beaches, tourist shops, and good restaurants. Hot Springs Cove is a favorite stop on the way to Nootka Sound, rich in early maritime history. An inside passage leads to the communities of Tahsis and Zabellos on the way to Kyuquot Sound, home to the tiny village of Walters Cove. A fifth Sound, Quatsino Sound, lies on the north side of Brooks Peninsula before reaching Cape Scott on the north end of Vancouver Island.
