Dive into the world of eelgrass meadows with us as we explore boating destinations across Washington and British Columbia. Along the way, we’ll hear from local partners who help protect these unique underwater ecosystems. This second article in a series is part of the Anchor Out of Eelgrass campaign, which encourages boaters to use best anchoring practices to safeguard sensitive eelgrass habitats.

Today, we’re cruising into Seafarers’ Park, at Anacortes, Washington with support from Port of Anacortes. “Come enjoy Anacortes and the surrounding areas. There is plenty to offer from hiking, biking, and shopping. Take a wildlife scenic tour or a charter fishing trip,” says Brad Johnson, Harbormaster at the Port of Anacortes (Cap Sante Marina).

Why Boaters Love Seafarers’ Park

Seafarers’ Park sits at the heart of the working waterfront at Anacortes, where the city’s strong maritime history meets beautiful coastal scenery. Visitors and boaters can enjoy easy access to outdoor adventure, welcoming community spirit, and a launch point to some of the Pacific Northwest’s best destinations. Whether you’re exploring the San Juan Islands, watching working vessels come and go, or simply relaxing along the shoreline, Seafarers’ Park offers a front-row seat to both nature and industry.

Why Eelgrass Matters Here

The waters around Anacortes support vibrant marine life, and eelgrass is a key reason why. Eelgrass beds provide essential habitat for many species, including Dungeness crab, a cornerstone of local fisheries. Juvenile crabs use eelgrass as protective nursery grounds, hiding from predators and feeding during their early development. Healthy eelgrass means a healthier crab population, which supports local fishermen, recreation, and the region’s maritime economy.

Anchoring Tips for Fidalgo Bay, Seafarers’ Park

  • Avoid shallow eelgrass zones by anchoring in areas deeper than 15 feet. The shoreline at Seafarers’ Park near Cap Sante Marina has pockets of eelgrass close to shore, so staying in deeper water protects habitat.
  • Use navigation aids and updated charts to spot shallow shelves around the peninsula and the entrance to Fidalgo Bay.
  • Watch for vessel traffic – Fidalgo Bay is an active boating area with several marinas serving Anacortes for commercial and recreational use. Choose anchoring locations away from traffic lanes.
  • Consider Cap Sante Marina for secure moorage if you prefer dock access and easy walks into downtown Anacortes, or require fuel and supplies.
  • Check local conditions: Wind shifts seasonally, and strong southeast winter winds can make exposed anchoring less comfortable.

Points of Interest

Cap Sante Viewpoint, located above the entrance to the marina, is an easily accessed hilltop offering sweeping views of the harbor, the city, and the surrounding islands. Walking paths lead to the top and reward you with one of the city’s most beloved panoramas.

Tommy Thompson Trail, a popular waterfront route, is perfect for walking or biking, connecting you to shoreline views, wildlife, and interpretive signs.

Anacortes Working Waterfront is where you can explore the docks, local shops, summertime farmer’s market, and historic displays celebrating the region’s fishing and boatbuilding heritage.

Seasonal Notes

Winter brings steady southeast winds, often making the harbor exposed to unsettled seas. In summer, winds typically shift to blow from the west, creating calmer, warmer days ideal for paddling, sailing, or enjoying Seafarers’ Park.

Stewardship Reminder
If you enjoy local salmon, Dungeness crab, and the thriving marine life that defines the region, you can help protect it. Anchoring outside of eelgrass beds is one of the simplest, most effective choices boaters can make. By doing so, you support healthy habitat, local fishermen, and the long-term sustainability of the waters we all enjoy.
