When planning a trip to Haida Gwaii, located 65-85 miles off the coast of British Columbia, first-class dining is not the immediate thing that comes to mind. In fact, the population might be considered sparse with only a few main villages on northern Graham Island, namely, Queen Charlotte, Skidegate, Port Clements, and Masset; Sandspit is the only village on Moresby Island to the south. The rest of the southern portion of Haida Gwaii consists of the Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve with several Haida Heritage sites. So how did “Dining with the Kings” restaurant evolve on the islands of Haida Gwaii? After thirty years in the newspaper business, Dianne and Jeff King decided to open their home during the summer months to host locals and visitors to the islands, providing exceptional creative dishes that one would find in a big city like Vancouver or Victoria. Dining with the Kings offers not only exceptional cuisine, but also offers an exceptional experience.
Guests for the evening are warmly greeted at the door with complimentary sparkling wine and a side-table set with an exquisite variety of appetizers like Salmon Mousse with crème fraiche, Antipasti, the Smoked Tuna Loin with minted pea puree, and the Polpette Wontons with red pepper puree canapes and handmade flatbread, to name a few. While dinner is being prepared, guests can mingle on the patio and admire the fabulous views, sharing stories of how they came to Haida Gwaii. After being seated among new friends, the next course is a choice of soup or a pasta dish, followed by a choice of two mains like the Local Wild Halibut with caper sauce, or the Porchetta-style Pork Tenderloin, which are served with a market vegetable. Scrumptious desserts like the Pistachio Semifreddo, or the Raspberry Sorbet with chocolate wafers, or perhaps the Chocolate Tart is presented as a finale. Yes, it’s a four-course meal that’s fit for a king.
