Boaters in B.C. waters are reminded to stay 400 meters (approximately 1/4 mile) from Southern Resident Killer Whales. This Federal Law (Fisheries & Oceans Canada) has designated the law to now include the waters of Howe Sound and Barkley Sound, including all of Alberni Inlet to the town of Port Alberni.
The total cruising grounds for the 400-meter separation from SRKW’s (Southern Resident Killer Whales) encompasses the East Side of Vancouver Island starting from Campbell River, running southward around the southern end of Vancouver Island, out the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and continuing up the West Side of Vancouver Island to Ucluelet.
The additional coverage area goes into effect on June 1, 2021.
