Sointula—The Harbourmaster’s office is being rebuilt. The new office will be in the same location. Currently, a temporary office is located just across the parking lot (towards the road) from the old office.

Alert Bay—All docks are now first come, first served. No docks are reserved for visiting pleasure boats. If full, anchorage in the bay is good, if a bit rolly, especially when ferries arrive.

Gorge Harbour Resort—The Floathouse Restaurant has expanded on a new cedar covered-and-uncovered deck. The food is excellent as always, but now there is more seating and an outdoor bar area. Gorge Harbour Resort is very popular in August. Reservations recommended.

Pender Harbour— Sunshine Coast Resort and Marina August Special. Stay 2 nights and get the third nights moorage free, only for Waggoner Cruising Guide readers. Just mention the Waggoner Guide when you check in with owner/manager Ralph Linnmann and enjoy your stay. 

Pender Harbour—Garden Bay Show & Shine Car Show, August 10th. Enthusiasts bring 50-75 antique and classic cars to this waterfront event in the parking lot above the marina.

Pender Harbour—Chamber Music Festival. This classic event will be held August 14-17. Right above Madiera Park Marina.  September 19-21 is the Pender Harbour Jazz Festival located at venues around the harbor.

Gibsons Marina—Additional transient moorage. This cute coastal town now has a new restaurant and music events on the waterfront all summer long. Unfortunately the book store, which also carried nautical books and charts, is no longer there. It was replaced by a very good olive oil store. Stop in for a taste. Smitty’s Oyster House, just below the main pier, is heaven for anyone who enjoys a selection of oysters on the half shell as well as other seafood. Last year I missed a new restaurant right next door on the water. It is the perfect contrast to Smitty’s —Bull Chophouse & Meating Place. It is offers beautiful decor and, according to locals, the steaks, chops and ribs are their signature dishes. According to Shawn Divers, the Proprietor, he really likes the menu he offers, but occasionally he too will sneak over to Smitty’s for a few oysters. He may have the right idea. Appetizers at Smitty’s and a rib dinner at Bull.

The Gibson’s Farmers Market is open on Friday afternoons at the Public Market building, just above the Gibsons Marina.

Montague Marina—New owners Dan and Mike are busy polishing this gem while dealing with a hot summer and strong demand for dock space. They are young, ambitious, and looking to serve their customers well. Moorage is less expensive than most in the area and fuel prices are low also. They have a new attitude about people who anchor out and bring their dinghy ashore: please stop in. They realize that anchorage customers spend money also—in the store, the Sea Blush Café, and at the "Twirlly Tree by the Sea" gift shop. Want Wi-Fi while anchored out? $5 per day. If it does not work at your anchor location, they refund your money. And, they are dog friendly. Watch for exciting renovations for next season. It is great to see new life for this important marina destination on the coast.

And…Tommy Transit is still driving the bus to the Hummingbird Pub. Great fun.
