West Sea Otter weather buoy provides critical weather data when deciding whether or not to cross Queen Charlotte Sound. We don’t like to go when it’s reporting seas in excess of 1.5 meters. Unfortunately, West Sea Otter was inoperable beginning May 11, 2014.

Since 2003 the Waggoner has published a recommendation that West Sea Otter buoy reports be monitored before rounding Cape Caution. We do NOT recommend rounding Cape Caution in these conditions, regardless of Pat Freeny’s modest-sounding report. The seas at Cape Caution had to be much higher than the picture suggests. The rainbow in Blunden Harbour is fabulous.
