Haida Gwaii

Bring your boat! Haida Gwaii, formerly called the Queen Charlotte Islands, is a remote and pristine archipelago of over 150 islands waiting for you to explore. Coined as the “Galapagos of the Northwest,” this glacier-carved ecosystem features hundreds of species of birds, unique species of bear, and plant life. Haida Gwaii means “Islands of the People” in the language of the Haida civilization, which once eclipsed 10,000 people until the 1800s with the arrival of smallpox. You can witness the remains of this once great culture in the Gwaii Haanas National Park, where you will be greeted by Haida Watchman who explain the historical significance of these early village sites. The Haida may not have had your yacht in mind when the islands were named, but your respectful visit will be welcome.
