This winter, a new bar opened up in Anacortes ― Union Tavern Local 902. In their historic downtown location, they have 18 beers on tap, a tasty menu and an inviting classic atmosphere which includes a bar, plenty of tables (some are perfect for large groups), window seating, a couch area, TVs for sports fans and a dart board.
Their “Beer Board” tells you what their selection is for the day, along with the alcohol content. They also have wine, liquor, including a new specialty cocktail menu, and cider. Happy Hour is every day from 3 to 6 p.m. and includes $1 off beers and well drinks. On some Tuesdays, they have Brewers Nights, and you have a chance to taste and talk to the brewer, and win prizes. Union Tavern Local 902 – Anacortes’s Newest Bar
Last night, we headed on down to sample their new menu, which now includes a specialty cocktail menu too. This is what we ordered.
Beer Cheese Dip with Pretzel Bites
The pretzel bites come with a creamy white cheddar dip made with a rotating selection of IPA, sauteed onions, jalapenos and green bell peppers. ($6) The pretzel bites were warm and chewy. The cheese sauce is flavorful with a spicy profile and not thick.
The nachos come with a pile of tortilla chips with shredded housemade chicken, white cheddar cheese, jalapenos, topped with cilantro and served with salsa verde and sour cream. We got ours without the jalapenos and sour cream. ($9) We liked the Verde sauce but wanted a little more pop of color and flavors, like tomatoes, red peppers or beans to brighten up the nachos.
Chicken Pot Pie
I couldn’t decide between the salmon salad special, the tacos and the chicken pot pie. When I told our server my delima, she immediately said, “Get the pot pie.” I’m so glad I listened to her advice. The pot pie is a blend of chicken, carrots, parsnhips, onions, radishes, and peas in a savory herb cream sauce, covered with puff pastry. ($12) When I was presented with my dishI, thought I am going to be taking some of this home, but it was so good I ended up eating it all.
Smoked Albacore Melt
We also ordered the smoked albacore melt, which has locally caught and smoked albacore tuna in a house tuna salad recipe with swiss cheese. You can have it grilled or cold on sourdough bread. ($11) This by far was my favorite dish of the night. The tuna salad was so smoky and cheesy. When I go back to the Union Tavern Local 902, this is what I’m going to order.
