CRUISING THE SECRET COAST UPDATES:
Here are a few updates for Jennifer and James Hamilton’s Cruising the Secret Coast

A Few Changes

September 17, 2009. Thanks to reader Frank Archer for passing these along.

If you ever consider updating and revising Jennifer and James Hamilton's excellent cruising guide, here are some notes I took regarding Seymour and Belize Inlets on our cruise there this year (2009).

There is no evidence of recent logging anywhere in this area now, just abandoned logging equipment perhaps waiting for a turn around in the economy, and the logged off areas appear to be at least a couple of years old. The only logging type activity is shake block cutting from downed cedar trees such as pictured on page 147.

page 93 - at the entrance to Charlotte Bay is a sign saying to contact Cougar Inlet Logging Company on radio frequency 165.000 before anchoring because there is blasting in the area 24/7. The area appeared to be abandoned with some boom sticks, a float, and a ramp to shore on the southern side. A work boat did come in while we were there, but we, and others, ignored the sign. I never did get around to contacting Comox Coast Guard Radio to find out what channel this was. The logging company float should be added as a circled D on the map on page 94.

page 95 - Mensdorff Point - the logging company dock is no longer there, so there is no opportunity for hiking from this spot.

page 96 - Warner Bay - the large logging camp is gone, so the anchorage is again perfect. There is an amateur fish hatchery operating in the lagoon.

page 97 - Frederick Sound - the large camp barge is gone, so the anchorage is even more than appealing. The anchorage should be added to the map on page 95.

page 97 - Salmon Arm - the anchorage is at the bight in the northeast, rather than northwest, head.

page 106 - Pack Lake - Charlie's dogs have now died, but Buck is still there.
