In your guide, you recommend both chart book 3313 and individual charts. Are both of these necessary? What is missing from 3313 that you recommend both? Thanks for your help.

Good question. The answer, happily, is that you don't need both the chart book 3313 and the individual sheets. If you are more comfortable with the book format, by all means choose chart book 3313. It's an excellent product.

My preference is individual sheets. I find them easier to plot courses on, and less cumbersome to move between the nav area and the helm station. Also, individual sheets can be folded down to show just a small patch of water. This is helpful in tight spots, where I might want to hold the chart in one hand while picking my way along.

The disadvantage to single sheets is the probability that you won't buy every single sheet. Faced with the mounting bill at the cash register, you might think, "Well, I really don't need the Plans charts. The smaller scale charts show the bays or passages well enough." That's a mistake. The Plans charts exist because the smaller scale charts don't show those particular bays or passages well enough. You can't make that mistake with chart book 3313, though. It has everything. So it comes down to a choice between formats -- book or sheets. I emphasize, though, that if you choose sheets, buy them all.
