Washington State Marine Parks are a superb resource for boaters. They typically have trails, campsites, and scenic anchorages. Many have docks and mooring buoys. We highlight all of them in the Waggoner Guide, but we don’t have detailed information on all of their shore side facilities.

The Washington State Parks Department recently launched an app to help users access parks more easily. The app is a free download, available for iOS and Android.

WA State Parks App

The new Washington State Parks app has detailed information on each state park.

Users can find parks in several ways. Scrolling through a list is one option. Searching by name is another. A map view is also available, which uses your devices GPS to find the nearest parks. To use this view, however, your device must be connected to the internet.

Detailed topo maps, like this one, are available for download.

Thankfully, the app is useful even when not connected to the internet. The data on parks is cached in the memory of the device itself. Particularly intriguing is the ability to cache detailed topographic maps of parks. These maps illustrate hiking trails and camping areas, and are available even when not connected to the internet. Want to go to a park with good hiking trails? That’s now easy to find, thanks to this new app.

Given the price tag (free!), we recommend all boaters cruising in Washington State download the app to their smartphone or tablet.
