Preparing for the 2024 Cruising Season – Spring into Action
Spring is a great time of year to enroll in those boating seminars and classes, plan your cruising itinerary, and check through your boat’s spare parts and maintenance needs. Bottom paint, fuel filters, zincs, hoses, heat exchanger, and sea strainers are just a few of the items you will want to check. Don’t forget to take the dinghy out for a shakedown as well. Be sure all your electronics are in working order and that you have all the latest charts for the areas you are planning to visit. If you are in need of major boat repairs and installations, schedule time with a boatyard as soon as possible, their schedules fill quickly. When the sun comes out and flowers bloom, boatyards are inundated with requests to schedule work for electrical services, fiberglass repairs, and projects for the engine room.
When out cruising, don’t get caught unprepared during an inspection from the Coast Guard. Have up-to-date fire extinguishers, emergency signals, life jackets, sanitation devices, and the required documentation and placards. Don’t forget to check your boat insurance; do you have coverage for the time period and areas you plan to cruise? Of course you will want to have the latest edition of the Waggoner Cruising Guide aboard your vessel as an ever-present reference.
